Joomla 5 update failed - what to do now?

Post by jj-OMTYKT » Tue May 14, 2024 6:02 am

I did yet another update from Joomla 4 to Joomla 5.
All other (4 sites) I have done has caused no problems, but this one failed.

Can't access neither frontend nor backend.

What would be the smartest move now ?

kr. John.

Welcome to the Joomla forum!

More information is required. It is not clear if the actual Joomla update reported an error or if the update process completed but neither the frontend nor the backend can be accessed.

If a PHP fatal error stops both the website and the backend, the culprit is usually an incompatible plugin. The version of the Helix Ultimate could be out of date or at least its error handling routine is incompatible.

Please post the results from the Forum Post Assistant (FPA) by following the instructions at https://forumpostassistant.github.io/docs/ so that the configuration can be reviewed.

I tried to restore the backup - which gave me access to the site - but with an error: "Cannot instantiate abstract class". Backend access was not an option either.

I solved the problem by deleting all files from the root, and then restoring the backup using Akeeba Kickstart one more time.
That brought the site back.
Then I tried to upgrade to Joomla 5 again, just to experience the same error.

There were no warnings or red flags in the process.
The php version is: PHP 8.1.28
Host: Siteground

Hope this information is helpful.

Did you restore the back to a clean (empty) folder and clean (empty ) database?

Siteground is updating their customer accounts to MySQL 8.x - the minimum requirement for Joomla 5 (alternatively you can use MariaDB (SG doesn't use that) or PostgreSQL (there might be problems with some Joomla extensions such as Akeeba Backup which doesn't support PostgreSQL) - has yours been upgraded? Otherwise, J5 won't run on MySQL 5.7 (which is the previous version available)

SG updated MySQL for my hosting account the other day, so I'm sure they're making progress.

Yes, I emptied the public_html folder.

I have updated several sites on Siteground with no problems - which is why today's challenges came as a bit of a surprise :) (only difference is , that it is two different Siteground accounts)

Think I'll just wait a while for things to stabilize....
