FPA / system information mismatch

Post by andrew913 » Fri Nov 17, 2023 11:32 pm

FPA says:
Max File Size = 64M
Max Upload Size = 64M
Memory Limit = -1

System Information says:
Upload Max File Size = 256M
Post Max Size = 256M
Memory Limit = 512M

I only have one php.ini and it has the values stated in System Information.
Everything is working, but I find this odd, and I'd prefer to be operating under the sys info values.

How many sites do you have? Could you be running the fpa in a folder for another site?

Just one site on a shared server at IONOS. I don't have visibility to the /etc folder so I'm now wondering if the host has a more restrictive php.ini than what I have in the /administrator folder.

I ran fpa in the root of my Joomla instance.

I only have one php.ini and it has the values stated in System Information.
What about .htaccess, httpd.conf or .user.ini?

Go to last tab of the System Information page, PHP Information, and look for 'upload_max_filesize' and 'post_max_size'. The value is shown in two columns, Local Value and Master Value, and they can be different. Both Joomla and FPA use the first one, Local Value.

On the one hand, the FPA runs run in the main Joomla folder and gets the directives from the Local Value of the main php.ini file of the web server. On the other hand, the Joomla Administrator gets its local values from the php.ini file in the administrator folder.

That solves the mystery, doesn't it?

.htaccess makes no reference to file sizes or memory. I don't have any httpd.conf or user.ini files.

To some extent. But which variables are in effect? And if one set of values takes precedence over the other, shouldn't FPA and System Info both report the values actually being used? Because one of them is misreporting. Seems like a bug to me.

That is not misreporting, IMHO. Both the FPA and the Administrator can only report on values that they run on, the values that the web server and PHP settings dish out to scripts run from those folders.

Set a similar php.ini file in the main Joomla folder or add the directives using the php_value statement to the .htaccess file.

No bug. Someone decided to put a more restrictive php.ini file in/administrator

The value is shown in two columns, Local Value and Master Value, and they can be different. Both Joomla and FPA use the first one, Local Value.
Well, apparently they don't. Mine shows 256M for Local Value, FPA reports 64M.

Setting a php.ini file in the main Joomla folder, or php_value statement to the .htaccess file, results in the same reporting. FPA = 64M, Joomla SysInfo = 256M.

My point being that if I'm a new Joomla user, and I read comments from @webdongle the other day, he says MaxFile = 256M, PostMax = 256M, and Memory Limit = 1M are the optimal settings. I look at my Joomla system info and find I'm spot on. Oh, pat on the back for me! But I'm not using those parameters, am I?

Seems like Joomla SysInfo should report the lesser of the two to help us understand issues we may encounter.

No bug. Someone decided to put a more restrictive php.ini file in/administrator

please quote my post that I say they "are the optimal settings".

Also settings that anyone recommends have nothing to do with the the way the fpa works. Nor do they have any relevance to your understanding of the fpa.

Then I apologize. One of the regular experts commented about max.filesize, post.size, and memory, then said double those values for Joomla 5. I thought it was you, but I may be wrong.

I think you missed the point. No worries, have a great day!

The value 256M is shown because of the php.ini file located in the /administrator folder. The FPA has been designed to run from the main Joomla folder, where it has access to the file configuration.php. It can only report on the values that PHP gives it when FPA is launched.

Setting a php.ini file in the main Joomla folder, or php_value statement to the .htaccess file, results in the same reporting. FPA = 64M, Joomla SysInfo = 256M.
The following settings in the .htaccess file work for me in both localhost and remote servers:

Code: Select all

php_value upload_max_filesize 256M
php_value post_max_size 256M
If you have access to the cPanel or a similar page, provided by your host, set those values by subdomain from the Software section - PHP Selection and MultiPHP INI Editor.
